Roman Entertainment

Dining out- One of the most popular activities for the upper class in Rome was dining out, or dinner parties. These parties were decorated with flowers, and usually accompanied by music. Unlike Greek banquets, Roman men and women could dine with one another. When Romans dined out, they usually dinned out at Thermopolium, or a type of tavern or pub. Some of these places offered other forms of entertainment, such as going to a brothel. Another popular activity was playing board games, usually involving gambling with dice.

The Theater- Another popular form of entertainment was the theater. Roman theater was based on the Greek Theater, such as comedies and tragedies. Classic dramas were performed by an all-male cast, wearing masks, and they usually took place during religious festivals. These performers always perform behind the same backdrop.

Pantomime- Pantomime was a dance program, involving one male dancer, and a chorus and musicians. Pantomime is closely resembles ballet. Some of these dancers would become small celebrities.

Mime- Mime was another type of performance in theaters that was very popular. No masks were used in mime, and males and females could be mimes and take place in performance. Most women did not perform mime because they lost their respectability. Mime plays usually involved adventure plots, with sex and violence added for entertainment.
