The Accelerated Reader Program is one of several reading programs available for students at Matthew Whaley. It is a reading incentive program that motivates students to read and comprehend more. Each student is placed on his/her independent reading level and assigned a color. Books in the media center are marked with corresponding color bands on the books' spines. These bands show the proper reading level. Students read their book independently and then complete a comprehension quiz using their classroom or library computer. The computer prints out each student's scores and points are earned according to the number of correct answers and the book's level of difficulty. Students accumulate points which will help them reach their AR goal.

Even more importantly, our AR program encourages students to enjoy reading and to engage in additional independent reading. The more children read the better their chance of becoming successful, life-long readers.
