The goal of our media center is to create an environment that recognizes every
child as an individual, fosters a positive self-concept, and stimulates curiosity
that results in every child achieving to the best of his or her ability.

The Media Center is a place that provides the backdrop for many types of
activities and all kinds of learning. It is important that it has a certain look
and feel. It should feel comfortable yet not cluttered, used but not messy,
welcoming and positive. Our library is a place where everyone is treated with
respect. Hopefully our students, parents, and staff will have such good feelings
about our library media center that they will transfer these feelings to all
libraries and feel comfortable going into any library to get information, ask
for help, find a good book, and take advantage of the programs that are
offered.

Students should always be responsible for the materials that they check out
and for their behavior while they are in the media center. Being responsible
for books and materials includes physically caring for books and returning
them in a timely manner. Being responsible for their behavior includes that
students should respect and follow the library rules:
  1. Be safe.
  2. Be productive.
  3. Be respectful to other people and to library materials.

The library is open from 8:30 - 4:00 daily except for library staff lunch
time from noon until 12:30.

Our library is here for the students and staff to use when they need it. In
addition to regularly scheduled class visits, students also can come and visit
individually or in small groups. Teachers can sign up for extra lessons,
storytimes, research sessions, and other collaborative activites.

Our daily circulation averages 200 books a day.

Many lessons are connected and integrated with the curriculum of the
classroom. In addition storytimes, oral expression, author studies, and
research skills are an integral part of the library program. However, the library media center's core curriculum is taken from the Nine Information Literacy Standards for Students.

Our parent, community, and William and Mary volunteers greatly impact
our library's successful program. Volunteers help with book check-outs
and check-ins, shelving books, helping students locate books, book repair,
reading shelves, bulletin boards, reading with students, pulling books,
processing books, working with the Accelerated Reading program, helping
with bibliographies, and on and on...

VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED!

"Children don't care what you know, they just need to know you care."

Mrs. Wilson, Library Media Specialist, and Mrs. Pauley, Library Assistant, think that every day is an exciting one in the Matthew Whaley library.
