	Farmers Insurance recently presented $1,500 worth of Social Studies and Math Text books to Matoaka Elementary. 	Professional storytellers Bobby Norfolk and Gayle Ross shared folktales and traditional Cherokee stories with Matoaka first and second graders.
	One of the two new tile murals at Matoaka created by art teacher Sally Henderson and Matoaka students. This mural depicts Matoaka, also known as Pocahontas.
	The Matoaka Harvest Festival sponsored by the PTA is one of the highlights of fall. Families enjoyed the petting zoo, inflatables, games, and arts and crafts activities.
	Matoaka 5th grade students participated in a special muscial salute and luncheon for our local veterans.
	Both students and families enjoyed the holiday concert by Matoaka's band and strings students.
	4th Grade teacher Cathy Naylor published her young adult book "The Gropples, According to Luke."
	1st Grade had a successful run with their "A Year With Frog and Toad" muscial.
	The Matoaka Autism team won a Starfish award from Superintendent Mathews for their work with students.
	One highlight of the year for our 2nd graders was the annual book parade. Each child dressed as a character from one of their favorite books.
	The American Girls group at Matoaka held a coin drive and donated the money they collected to the Heritage Humane Society.
	Our PTA sponsored a "Are You Smarter than a 3rd/4th/5th Grader" family fun night and silent auction this spring. Fifth grade teacher Bryan Cole was the game show host.
	The third grade's "Big Chill" musical got rave reviews!
	The Matoaka Battle of the Books team went head to head with the best teams of the region! To build team spirit they held a read-in and sleepover in our media center.
	Author Peter Catalanato was one of the many professional visitors who spoke to students at Matoaka this year thanks to our PTA.
	Matoaka had an excellent turn out for its second annual Family Fitness night featuring demonstrations, hands-on activities, and health and wellness information from community providers.
	P.E. teacher Mrs. Bucklin coordinated the Matoaka Jump Rope for Heart event and raised thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association. Hailey was the student who raised the most money. Way to go Hailey!
	The Lafayette Track Team generously donated their time and energy this spring to working with kindergarten teacher Mrs. Chantry on clearing the new Matoaka Nature Trail. It is a one mile trail that circles Matoaka and is perfect for observing the plants and animals in our local environment.
	The Matoaka Great Computer Challenge team brought home a first place medal for Internet Scavenger Hunt and a third place medal in desktop publishing. This is the second year in a row that Matoaka has earned medals!
