Create Your Own Scientist!
The Matoaka Science Fair will be held on Thursday, February 16th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. As part of our focus on science, the Science Fair Committee is inviting all students to create their own scientist at work! Students should draw a colorful picture of a scientist working on a new discovery and include a caption describing the scientist's work. Drawings need to be turned in to classroom teachers by Monday, February 13th. Check out this flier for more information [link].

I Nominations Sought For 2012 Teacher of the Year
Which teacher has had the biggest influence in your, or your student’s, life? Which one has gone above and beyond the call of duty in ensuring that students get the best education possible? Matoaka Guidance Counselor Jen Smith Chosen as "Outstanding Professional School Counselor"
To honor National School Counseling Week, February 6 through 10, theHampton Roads School Counselor Leadership Teamannounced that three WJCC school counselors were named “Outstanding Professional School Counselor ” for our division in 2012: Jennifer Smith of Matoaka Elementary School; Mary Jo Bracken of Toano Middle School, and Charna Moss-Gregory of Warhill High School. These three people are excellent representatives of a team of counselors that are an integral part of the educational process that enables all students to achieve success in school.

Second Grade Visits the Virginia Living Museum
Matoaka second graders recently visited the Virginia Living Museum to learn about native Virgnia species and their habitats as part of their science unit on animal adaptations. |
