Super Teacher Awards: January 4-February 14:
Through this program, the Virginia Lottery will pay tribute to those educators who put smiles on their students' faces and who are shaping their futures. The Virginia Lottery will recognize eight teachers across the Commonwealth as "Super Teachers." Each winning teacher will receive a $2,000 credit from The Supply Room Companies to outfit their classroom as well as a $2,000 prize from the Virginia Lottery.

This is a combined lesson on aeronautics and algebra. Students design an airplane in Mr. Derse’s class out of 3 x 5 cards and paper clips and see who has a value of the smallest slope. The smaller the slope, the better the glider flies.

Students in ceramics class at LHS researched a famous artist and after summarizing their research created a mini ofrenda to the artist inspired by the Mexican Holiday Dia De Los Muertos (day of the dead.) These mixed media sculptures utilized several ceramic hand building techniques and surface treatments. This multi cultural lesson integrated English, Art, and a splash of history.

The Williamsburg James City County PTA Council invites you to a “Dialogue with WJCC Leadership.” Superintendent Dr. Steve Constantino will provide an update on the strategic planning process and the 2012/2013 budget. This will be followed by an opportunity for Q&A with WJCC School Board members Heather Cordasco, Elise Emanuel, Joe Fuentes, Ruth Larson and Dr. Oscar Prater in informal breakout sessions.

Virginia Council on the Status of Women (VCSW) 2012 STEM Essay Contest
The Council on the Status of Women in collaboration with the Science Museum of Virginia announces the 2012 STEM Essay Contest. First Lady Maureen McDonnell serves as Honorary Chairwoman for the contest.
“The purpose of the Council on the Status of Women (Council) is to help women reach their potential and maximize their contribution to society and the Commonwealth as wage earners and citizens. The Council has initiated several projects to meet this goal, one being the annual essay contest for young women in high school.”

The program invites students to take advantage of the numerous Advanced Placement course offerings available at the secondary level. An automatic car wash, a surgical device and a dumpster truck have this in common. They all use hydraulics and pneumatics and are classified as “robotic.”Introduction to Engineering students incorporated those ideas in making their own robotic arms that had to be move left and right, up and down and hold and release an object as it was passed down a simulated assembly line. Powered by syringes, tubing and water, Aadahl’s students soon realized the many challenges to building, operating and maintaining a hydraulic system. SEE VIDEO

LHS will be giving the National Spanish Exam this spring. It will be given in March but registration is taking place NOW. The exam is open to ALL students of Spanish, even if they are not currently enrolled in Spanish. The cost is $5 and is payable to any Spanish teacher. Registration is due no later than Friday, Jan. 20. |
