Another component of the Primary Years Program requires that students learn an additional language besides their native language.  The staff and parents of James River Elementary selected Spanish to be the second language of instruction because it is quickly becoming the second language for our country and our students are increasingly more likely to be exposed to others whose mother tongue language is Spanish.

Spanish instruction will be provided for all students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade as a component of the weekly Centers schedule.  The curriculum for Spanish will be taught in thematic units aligned with the SOL curriculum at each grade level.
