The Visions program in Williamsburg-James City County Schools provides services for potentially gifted and identified gifted students in grades K-12. Students are continuously screened for gifted services, but the formal gifted identification process for rising 5th graders takes place during the spring semester of 4th grade. If you are interested in learning more about this program, or would like to know if your child is a candidate for Visions screening, please contact Pat Chappell, the gifted resource teacher/specialist at James River Elementary. She can be reached by calling the school at 887-1768, or by e-mail at chappellp@wjcc.k12.va.us. |
“Bilingual children have huge benefits in the tool box of their brain in every subject. Becoming bilingual means that you develop connections across the two hemispheres of the brain that don’t exist in children who have one language. And it enhances all areas of thinking”

Market Day |
James River Elementary First Graders participated in Market Day on May 11, 2012. The students were producers and consumers. They earned money over two weeks based on their behavior. They had to make choices on what they wanted to buy and they quickly realized they couldn't have everything they wanted.

Second Grade Musical: “Temples and Tombs” |
The stage at James River Elementary School was transformed into the banks of the Nile River as second grade IB thinkers performed the musical, “Temples and Tombs” for their families and friends on Friday, April 27. The performance enhanced the students’ understanding of Virginia’s social studies SOLs that recognize the contributions, geography and climate of the ancient Egyptians. Music teacher, Kim Long, and the five teachers, helped second graders become explorers, mummies, pharaohs, pyramid builders and story tellers through dance and song. The second graders showed confidence and commitment as communicators of the knowledge that had acquired during their unit of inquiry. Encore! Bravo! Hooray for the second graders at James River!
