Jamestown students earn All-District Band recognition! Students from all high schools are eligible to audition for a “District Band” comprised of the highest-scoring musicians for each instrument. The district has one middle school band and two senior high (Symphonic and Concert) bands. On January 9, students performed scales, a prepared solo, and sight-reading for competition judges. JHS students competed with over 1000 other students from high school band programs from the district. Students who were selected for “District Band” will spend three days of rehearsal with a noted guest conductor and then perform a concert with that guest conductor at the end of “All-District” weekend. Rehearsals are Thursday, February 4th through Saturday, February 6th, with the performance on Saturday, February 6th at 2:00 PM in the Gloucester High School auditorium. The WJCC Community Scholarship Fund, Inc. is a non-profit organization that exists solely to provide scholarships for students graduating from Jamestown, Lafayette, and Warhill High Schools, serving Williamsburg and James City County. The fund has no paid employees and is run entirely by volunteers. All money raised, except for direct operating expenses, is used for scholarships awarded, without discrimination, in consideration of these factors: curriculum difficulty, class rank, extra-curricular activities, application essay, and financial need.  It is not necessary for a student to show financial need in order to be eligible for a WJCC CSF scholarship.
The fund was founded in 1974, when it awarded seven scholarships totaling $1,500. Just as the Fund’s ability to provide scholarships has grown, so has the need. Each year the number of deserving aspirants grows, and each year the cost of higher education rises. Our 2010 goal is $60,000.  In 2009, 52 scholarships valued at $41,900 were awarded to Lafayette, Jamestown, and Warhill High School Students. The minimum award was $600.

Latin Certamen

Williamsburg, On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, Latin students from WJCC high and middle schools gathered at JHS for a little friendly academic competition (called a certamen in Latin).  The purpose of the contest was to allow students to review material for exams while competing as teams with students of their own level of study.  Jamestown students who had already completed AP Latin helped teachers run each session by scoring and judging.  Levels one and two competitions were particularly exciting as middle school students challenged high school students.  Questions included topics such as:  Latin vocabulary, English derivatives with Latin roots, Latin grammar, Roman culture and mythology.  Winning teams were Toano Middle School (Latin I), Lafayette High School (Latin II), and Jamestown High School (Latin IV).  Awards were presented to students on each winning team while students socialized over refreshments after the games.
