Everything You Need to Know About Kindergarten:

A Parent’s Guide

Welcome to D.J. Montague Kindergarten!  I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child and meeting each of you as the year progresses.  I know all of the papers we have been or will be sending home must be overwhelming.  However they are very important in keeping your child’s records up-to-date and accurate.  Please return the forms promptly and let us know of any changes during the year.

The information below answers the questions asked most about kindergarten.

Absences

If your child misses school for any reason, you must send a note with him/her on the day he/she returns to school stating the reason for the absence.  This is a school board policy and failure to do so could result in a phone call or visit from a truant officer

Backpacks

Please provide your child with a backpack or book bag.  It will be tremendous help in getting important papers, beautiful artwork, and precious belongings to and from school.

Belongings

Please label all coats, umbrellas, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc. with your child’s name.

Birthdays

You are welcome to bring cupcakes or a special snack on or near your child’s birthday.  This will count as your monthly snack contribution.  Please let me know a few days in advance if you plan to send something in.

Bus Policy & Dismissal

I will put your child on his/her assigned bus each day at dismissal time unless I receive a note from you with other directions.  If you realize during the day that you have forgotten to send a note you must call the school office.  I will not let your child remain at school for you to pick up unless you have sent me a note.  Children at this age can get messages confused so I will not change going home plans without a note from home.  A note is necessary if there is any change in your child’s transportation plans.

Centers

Your child will be participating in “centers” for art, music, library, physical education and computer lab.  They will visit a different center each day for 45 minutes.  We will be making a monthly schedule so you will know exactly what center your child will be having each day.  You will need to refer to your schedule daily so you will know when to return library books and when to dress your child in sneakers and clothes for P.E.

Lunch

Children may bring their own lunch or buy the school lunch.  We ask that you not send candy or soda in your child’s lunch box.  Also, kindergartners are not allowed to buy ice cream or candy at school.  We find they are tempted to not eat their lunch when these goodies are available.  The school cafeteria will begin serving lunch on Wednesday.  Lunch will cost $1.65 and includes white milk, chocolate milk, or juice.  Children that bring their lunch can purchase a drink for $.35.  You may pay by the week (send money or check in Monday).  Checks can be made payable to D.J.Montague.  I will be sending home another letter about lunch along with a zip-lock baggie to send lunch money in.
