FOOD

“The Greeks had simple, light meals for breakfast and lunch.  Breakfast usually was a piece of bread dipped in wine.  Lunch consisted of cheese with figs or olives.  The main meal of the day was eaten in the evening.  Dinner was often fish, vegetables, fruits, and honey-flavored pastries.  Meat was in short supply an eaten only on special occasions.” (pg. 13)

“In Greek cities a man often invited other men to a dinner party in his home.  The man’s wife and the other women of the household did not attend.  Evening activities usually included much feasting along with discussions involving philosophy and politics.  As the guests ate, they were entertained by musicians, dancers, and acrobats.” (pg. 13)

Some of the foods that ancient Greeks enjoyed: grapes, olives, honey, apples, feta cheese, grape juice, pears, and crusty bread.
