ØSponsored by The Historic Triangle Substance Abuse Coalition
Underage Drinking.
Ø4-SOBRFN
(476-2736) is a prevention
initiative designed to stop underage drinking parties in Williamsburg and James City and York
counties. The goal is to prevent tragic outcomes of underage drinking (alcohol-related car
accidents, binge drinking, sexual assault, violence, and vandalism).
ØA dedicated anonymous phone line will connect to the HTSAC office. Anyone can leave tips about alleged underage drinking
parties on an automated voice mail system. The messages are checked several times a day by
HTSAC staff, and addresses are cross-checked for validity. Valid information is
forwarded to the appropriate law enforcement office. Law enforcement will follow up on
the tip, either by phone or a visit to the residence.
ØThis is a non-punitive measure for both youths and
parents to stop parties before they start. 42% of WJCC seniors have used alcohol in the last
30 days. Four out of ten Virginia traffic deaths in 2003 were alcohol-related;
far from being a “snitch line,” the new tipline is designed not to stop teenage fun but to
prevent traffic deaths and other violent outcomes of drinking.
