Toano Middle School is located in James City County, approximately 10 miles west of historic Williamsburg, Virginia. Toano Middle School is one of 12 schools in Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools.
Toano Middle School is one of three WJCC middle schools providing a rich academic program for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. Toano teachers provide core instruction (English/language arts, math, science and social studies) through interdisciplinary teams made up of three to five teachers. All Toano students enroll in health and physical education and participate in a variety of exploratory and elective classes that may include music, band, choir, art, computers, work and family studies, technology, and foreign language. Beginning with the 1999-2000 school year, this rich offering of classes will be scheduled into the normal school day (7:40 a.m.-2:40 p.m.), eliminating early morning classes.
Toano Middle School is a beautiful, modern facility built in 1992 and designed specifically to provide instruction in this team-based approach. Toano is equipped with two state-of-the-art computer labs and is "wired" to ensure our students lead us into the 21st century with highly-developed computer technology skills.
Toano's highly professional staff are trained to address the needs of pre-adolescents, are repeatedly recognized for creative approaches to instruction, and continually strive to help every student experience success. Toano staff promote positive student citizenship through many student leadership opportunities, service learning, peer mediation programs, guidance services, and coordination with community outreach services.
Toano students have excelled through involvement in many academic clubs, activities and sports. Toano Middle School challenges students to reach their highest potential in a welcoming learning environment that fosters partnerships among students, teachers, parents and community. The mission of Toano Middle School, in partnership with home and community, is to provide a safe environment that supports the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of students, while challenging them to become: lifelong learners, independent thinkers, responsible citizens.
