Berkeley Middle School will promote the academic achievement of every student and will positively contribute to the physical, social, and emotional development of each child. In partnership with parents and community members, we will continuously foster an open, caring and supportive learning environment that will ensure each child's transition from early adolescence to responsible independence and lifelong learning.
Berkeley is one of three middle schools that serves the Williamsburg-James City County community. Nearly 650 students currently attend Berkeley in grades 6 through 8, and a staff of more than 60 teachers and 20 support personnel provide the caring, supportive, challenging environment for which Berkeley is known. To accommodate the increasing student population, Berkeley has undergone major renovations of the old building and construction of three new additional buildings. Today the school is a beautiful sprawling structure made up of four interconnected buildings. Each grade level has its own pod. The new library is modern and is equipped with 10 desktop computers where students can do research on the Internet. It has a new media retrieval system. Berkeley also has a new computer lab and a writing center.
Our curriculum is designed to bridge the transition for young adolescents between their elementary school experience and the rigors of high school. We emphasize a core curriculum in language arts, reading, math, science, and social studies. Students also enjoy wide opportunity to explore their interests and nurture their talents in band, choir, art, home studies, technology, physical education, computers, and foreign languages (including Spanish, French, Latin, and German)!
Berkeley also offers a variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular programs for students. AVID, special education, alternative education, Project Phoenix, the After-School Program, ATOMS, Model United Nations, and Math Counts are just some of the co-curricular programs that complement and support our core academic mission. Extra-curricular opportunities include the school newspaper, yearbook, Bulldog News, football, cheerleading, softball, basketball, in-line hockey, field hockey, volleyball, and tennis. These activities are integral to meeting the social, emotional, and physical needs of many of our students and help foster well-rounded interests.
