The Office of Multicultural Services provides resources and collaboration with building principals, Academic Services staff, and community stakeholders to facilitate the elimination of the achievement gap. Major programming endeavors include, but are not limited to Extended Day Programs, Extended Week Programs, Cultural Competence Professional Development, K-8 Mentoring, Parental and Community Involvement, and Summer Enrichment Programs. There are six summer programs sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Services to provide higher-order, problem-based learned to enrich students who have met grade-level promotion requirements.
The program of work for Multicultural Services involves Minority Achievement Leaders (MALs), and After-School Facilitator (ASF) teachers who collaborate to provide information and “best practices” activities to help eliminate the achievement gap for all students in grades k-8. The Minority Achievement Leaders (MALs) collaborate on a part-time basis with building principals and school staffs to facilitate the school improvement process as it pertains to closing the achievement gap. Additionally, MALs provide advocacy for students of minority status using standardized test data as a guide and collaborate to provide professional training on parental involvement, teaching skills and cultural responsiveness. Mentors and volunteers are provided 8 through community and business groups with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Inc. to assist students in grades k-8. Volunteers are able to register through the Office of Multicultural Services to complete volunteer applications, training, and security background checks.
The Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee (MSACC) consists of approximately 15 community stakeholders from businesses, the College of William and Mary, parents, teachers, and administrators. With annual approval from the WJCC School Board, the MSAAC serves as advocates and monitors internal and external partnerships with the schools, departments, and community in eliminating the achievement gap for all students in WJCC.
