When is the best time to register our children?
Parents are encouraged to register their children beginning May 4th. Early registration is encouraged to help plan for your children.

Children must be five years old on or before September 30.

Registration Details

Parents should bring their child’s:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Number
  • Current Immunization Record
  • Physical Examination Record
  • Two (2) Proofs of residence (example: a lease or utility bill)
  • NOTE: If you do not have all of this information, school staff members will help you obtain it during the registration program

The parent/guardian of each child must provide two proofs of residence, a social security number/card, a certified birth certificate, and evidence of adequate immunization with the prescribed number of doses of vaccine against the following diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (DTP), mumps, measles, rubella (MMR), hepatitis B, polio, and varicella.

A blood level screening may also be needed.

Please let the school office or school nurse know of any special medical problems your child may have so we can best handle any emergency.

If any of the registration requirements cannot be met due to homelessness, school staff will be notified to assist the family with enrollment under provisions of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvements Act.

About Kindergarten

Kindergarten is an important part of the total school program. Broad goals of kindergarten are the same as the other grades; namely, children will grow in all areas of development: physical, emotional, social, and intellectual. Although the goals are identical, kindergarten classrooms look quite different. In other grades, children’s textbooks may be used extensively to teach subject matter. In kindergarten, the content areas are integrated throughout the day so that children are actively involved in exploring their environment, manipulating objects, and interacting with children and adults.

Our kindergarten classrooms have available to children:
Learning centers so that children:

can work individually or in small groups
can make choices among activities that are interesting to them
can move about as they feel the need
can work with real objects that are open-ended, stimulate thought, and promote problem-solving behavior

Small-group instruction so that children:

can participate in activities that meet their individual needs and in which they can experience success
can interact with other children with similar interests and abilities

Whole-group activities so that children can:

listen to stories
participate in art and music activities
share and discuss
build group unity and spirit

Certificate of Birth
Your child’s birth certificate must be presented before your child is enrolled in school. Birth certificates for children born in Virginia may be obtained by the parent or guardian by request/application from:
Office of Vital Records, Virginia State Health Department, PO Box 1000, Richmond, Virginia 23218 or in person at The Shops at Willow Lawn Mall, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive, Suite 275, Richmond. For more information, call (804) 662-6200.
The application must include name of child, date and place of birth, and full name of the mother including maiden name. A check or money order for $12.00 must be enclosed with the application. Do not send cash or stamps.
If your child was born outside of the state of Virginia, contact the Bureau of Vital Statistics in the state of your child’s birth.

Social Security Number
State law requires that all students enrolled in public schools present a federal social security number. Under some circumstances, this requirement may be waived. To obtain a social security number for your child, you can write or call the Social Security Administration in your area for an application. Completed applications, an original copy of the birth certificate (not a photocopy), and one other document with the child’s name recorded on it can be mailed to the Social Security Administration. The birth certificate will be returned to you with your child’s social security number. You can also go to your local social security office to complete the application and present the birth certificate and second identifying document. Your child’s social security number will then be mailed to you.

Proof of Residence
Two (2) Proofs of residency includes documentation such as evidence of residence purchase or lease, personal property tax assessment, real estate tax assessment, utility bill, or temporary/transitional housing verification. Other documents may be accepted at the discretion of the principal.

Scheduling
Full-day kindergarten programs follow the regular elementary school day schedule. Exceptions to the regular schedule are noted on the school calendar. A copy of the calendar is available in this HERE.

Transportation
Bus transportation is available to all kindergarten children living within their zoned school of attendance. School bus run information (bus stop locations & times) can be accessed on WJCC Public School Web Page at www.wjcc.k12.va.us and then clicking on the link (bus stop information). School bus stop information is typically not complete until the latter part of August to allow for the most current busing information and capture any families arriving late to our community.
Once at the website link, simply enter your house/building number and the first few letters of your street name. You can simply check the “GO” button and be taken to the next screen or you may enter a grade (00 for KG) and then check the “GO” button. In most cases a selection of streets names will appear beginning with those same letters you typed for your street name. Click on the correct street name and you are taken to a screen where you will select the school (elementary, middle, or high) which serve the address you selected. Click on the school for which you require information. The bus stop and scheduled bus arrival times will be displayed. If you have additional children in another school simply choose “Edit User Information” and it will take you back to the previous screen and you can choose another school.
Should you have difficulty accessing this information or feel there is an error with the information, please call our transportation office at 757-565-0808 Option #1 for assistance. You may access “Twitter” to learn about late arrivals in transportation. In addition, you may access the transportation link for frequently asked questions.

Personal Transportation
It is important that all children arrive promptly and be picked up promptly at dismissal time. No child may leave school with anyone other than a member of the immediate family, unless written parental permission is given to the teacher and the child is signed out in the school office. Dropping children off at school prior to the buses arriving is discouraged, as adult supervision is not available until all other children arrive. Special arrangements for dropping off children or picking up children early must be approved by the principal in advance of the exception.

Attendance
State law requires that all students enrolled in public schools present a federal social security number. Under some circumstances, this requirement may be waived. To obtain a social security number for your child, you can write or call the Social Security Administration in your area for an application. Completed applications, an original copy of the birth certificate (not a photocopy), and one other document with the child’s name recorded on it can be mailed to the Social Security Administration. The birth certificate will be returned to you with your child’s social security number. You can also go to your local social security office to complete the application and present the birth certificate and second identifying document. Your child’s social security number will then be mailed to you.

Progress Reports
Parents will receive four written progress reports each year, at least one of which is discussed at parent-teacher conferences. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers at any time if they have questions or concerns about their child or program.
