Adult Education

 

GED / Adult Education program consists of the High School GED Program, the Adult Education Program, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and GED testing.
           
The Adult Education Program includes Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED preparatory classes
and serves those individuals 18 years old who have not earned their high school diplomas.  A variety of class locations, dates, and times are available for classes throughout Williamsburg-James City County*.  Classes are open enrollment and students can begin classes at any time during the year.  They are free of charge.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
classes are offered to adults who are not native speakers of English.  These classes help the learners improve their skills in reading, writing and speaking English.  Learners may enroll at any time during the year and the classes are FREE of charge.

The GED exam is administered monthly at various locations, depending upon the exam date selected.  Applicants must be 18 years of age and not enrolled in public school.  The exam fee is $45.00 for the entire test for first-time takers and $7.00 for each test that needs to be retaken.  Please register at Warhill High School, 4615 Opportunity Way, VA  23188.  Registration is required at least one week prior to the exam date. 

*Classes are also held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

Gifted Education

 

VISIONS is the name given to the gifted program in WJCC. Each of our twelve schools has a full-time gifted resource specialist who works collaboratively with classroom teachers and other staff to meet the cognitive and affective needs of gifted learners. Ability tests, achievement scores, observations, teacher and parent rating scales, class participation, and student products are used to determine gifted placement.

Counseling and Guidance

 

The WJC guidance and counseling program recognizes that every student needs strong academic, career, and social skills to benefit from the educational program. The divisionÕs guidance program is designed to enhance students' skills in these three areas. Guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support activities provide the framework for the K-12 guidance program.

High School GED

 

The high school GED program has three components: Pre-GED, GED Exam Preparation and Individual Student Alternative Education Program (ISAEP). The Pre-GED class is designed to help students whose academic performance is between 6th and 9th grade improve basic reading, writing and math skills, so that they will be able to advance to the GED class. The class meets in building #10 at Center for Eduational Opportunities from 8:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. daily. Transportation is provided. The GED exam preparation class is designed to meet the needs of students whose reading, writing and math skills are above 9th grade level. These students have earned few credits toward obtaining a high school diploma. Instruction is directed toward the requirements of the GED exam. Upon completion of the program, students are expected to qualify for the GED certificate. The class meets in building #10 at Center for Eduational Opportunitiesfrom 12:00 noon - 2:15 p.m. daily. Transportation is provided. The ISAEP class is similar to the GED class. In addition to GED preparation, students must complete a vocational component. The class meets in building #10 at Center for Eduational Opportunities from 2:15 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Transportation is provided.

International Baccalaureate Primary Years (IBPYP)

 

James River Elementary School has been an authorized IB Primary Years Program World School since July 2006 for grade K-5. The IB Primary Years Program focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

James River is currently the only school in the WJCC division that offers this program for students in the zoned area and those accepted through the magnet program. You can read more about this excellent opportunity for young people on the James River Elementary School Website.

Minority Achievement

 

The Multicultural Affairs Office offers several division-wide programs that help to meet the needs of the minority students in this division. Some of the programs are site based while others are open to students division wide.

Preschool Programs

 

The Williamsburg-James City County school division provides school-based preschool services for children from two through five years of age. The program is a collaborative model serving children at risk, children with identified disabilities or delays, and a limited number of community children with no identified risk factors or delays. This intensive early intervention effort focuses on parent involvement and a comprehensive approach to serving young children and their families.

Staff Development

 

The staff development program of WJCC Schools is coordinated to provide both building and division level opportunities for teachers to improve their skills and expertise. Each school has a Staff Development Team which analyzes test data and other pertinent information to determine the staff development needs for the school. Workshops which address identified needs are held throughout the year on staff development days, at faculty meetings, at team meetings, and at before and after school sessions.
