Counseling

The mission of the WJC school division is to achieve excellence in education through partnership with home and community so that each student becomes a lifelong learner, an independent thinker, and a responsible citizen. In order to support this mission, the WJC school division is committed to a K-12 comprehensive guidance program based on student, school, and community needs. The WJC guidance and counseling program recognizes that every student needs strong academic, career, and social skills to benefit from the educational program. The division's guidance program is designed to enhance students' skills in these three areas. Guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support activities provide the framework for the K-12 guidance program. Twenty three certified professional school counselors are responsible for implementing the division's guidance and counseling program with the support of the school community.

Mission :

Professional school counselors collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and other school and community members to foster, promote, and improve student success and achievement in schools.

Vision:

The counselor’s role is to help each student to maximize his/her potential.

Objectives:

The Board of Education authorized the Department of Education to prepare revised Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools .  Subsequently, three standards define the objectives:

  • ...Academic counseling, which assists students and their parents to acquire knowledge of the curricula choices available to students, to plan a program of studies, to arrange and interpret academic testing, and to seek post-secondary academic opportunities;
  • ...Career counseling, which helps students to acquire information and plan action about work, jobs, apprenticeships, and post-secondary educational, and career opportunities;
  • ... Personal/social counseling, which assists students to develop an understanding of themselves, the rights and needs of others, how to resolve conflict and to define individual goals, reflecting their interests and abilities.
