Lafayette HS One-Act Drama Wins Regional Competition; On To States Dec. 6 Lafayette High School’s one-act drama “These Shining Lives” took first place at the regional Virginia High School League (VHSL) One-Act Drama Competition this past weekend at Lafayette High School. The winning cast competed against seven other schools in the region, including Jamestown High School’s play “Thanks,” which placed fifth in the regional competition. Senior Madison Landis was named All-Region Best Actor; Wren Beavers and James Scarola also earned all-region honors. Lafayette HS will make its fifth consecutive trip to state one-act competition Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Monticello High School in Charlottesville. |

Students In Grades 7-8 Can Apply To Attend Engineering Technology Series Starting in January, 7th and 8th grade students and parents can apply to participate in three free sessions offered by the Governor’s Academy for Innovation, Technology and Engineering (GAITE), and sponsored by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, where they can learn about engineering technology from experts from NASA Langley, Canon Virginia, Huntington Ingalls Industries and Thomas Nelson Community College. | New “Language Is Power” Program Reaches Out To Parents Of English
Language Learners James River Elementary School and World Languages recently hosted a program called Language Is Power (LIP) that reaches out to parents of English language learners (ELLs) in the school to get them more engaged, help their communication with school personnel, and give them tools to help their children at home. The College of William and Mary’s Literacy for Life program handles the teaching aspect of LIP, and Spanish teacher Hilda Espinal and ESL teacher Diane Avjean are WJCC coordinators. These teachers also supervise the parents’ children so the parents are able to attend the class. | May, 2011 | WJCC Is First School Division In Nation To Adopt Colonial Williamsburg On-Line History Curriculum "Idea of America,” Colonial Williamsburg’s new on-line American history and citizenship curriculum, has been adopted for use by the Williamsburg/James City County School Division for use in its classrooms, making WJCC the first school division in the nation to do so. | Lafayette HS Takes Top VHSL Academic Activities Honors In Bay Rivers District For 4th Consecutive Year For the fourth year in a row, Lafayette High School students have placed first among Bay Rivers District schools in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Academic Activities competition, and fourth in the Commonwealth. The Academic Activities competition rates seven areas: Forensics, Debate, Scholastic Bowl, One-Act Play, Newspaper, Yearbook, and Literary Magazine. The school recently celebrated at the annual Academic Activities Awards Banquet, where it was announced that the LHS yearbook had won its unprecedented sixth consecutive state championship, along with LHS’s one-act play, “Over the River and Through the Woods,” which also took state honors. | 4 Elementary Schools Earn “Distinguished School” Status; Haley Honored As Top Nutrition Director The WJCC School Board presented certificates to four WJCC elementary schools at its regular meeting Tuesday for achieving Title 1 Distinguished School status: James River, Matthew Whaley, Norge, and Rawls Byrd.
