Three WJCC Instructors Recognized For Earning National Board Certification

Three WJCC teachers who recently earned National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) were recognized at the WJCC School Board meeting Jan. 17.   The NBPTS’s mission statement is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do; providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards, and advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.
Earning this distinction this year were:

Sheila Glennon
of Jamestown High School, an English and language arts teacher who has been with our Division for 11 years.  Glennon has taught in the AVID program, and currently chairs the Shared Decision Making Committee at Jamestown.

JudsonHeather Judson, a reading recovery teacher at J. Blaine Blayton Elementary School.  Judson has been with WJCC for five years, and has completed a master’s degree in Reading, Language and Literacy during that time.  She serves on Blayton’s Curriculum, Instruction and Achievement Committee.
Miller
Barry Miller,
a health and physical education teacher at Jamestown High School who joined WJCC 11 years ago.
Anyone may apply to become certified, but the evaluation process is rigorous. Applicants must submit four portfolio entries, three of which demonstrate teaching methods used in the classroom, and a fourth that shows accomplishments outside the classroom and how they impact student learning.  Applicants also must demonstrate knowledge by completing six exercises developed for the teacher’s chosen certificate area.  Applicants often wait up to three years after taking the evaluation to learn if they have become certified.

Sheila Glennon was unable to attend the meeting to receive her certificate.
