James River Seeks Volunteers To Help With Foreign Language Support

Students whose first language is not English, or who speak a language other than English at home, receive support in that language in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program at James River Elementary School.  The support is currently provided to 40 students in grades two to five in Spanish.  The support is provided by parent volunteers and students from the College of William & Mary.  Research studies reveal that students who learn to read and write in their first language will become stronger students in their second language, in this case English.

James River is looking for parent and student volunteers to commit to about 30 minutes per week for Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic and German.  There will be two to three students per language group. Contact Janet Parker at 887-1768 or parkerj@wjcc.k12.va.us.
