Carol M. White Physical Education

The Carole M. White Physical Education Program is a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education that provides grants to community based-organizations to initiate, expand or enhance physical education programs. Funds may be used to provide equipment and support to enable students to participate actively in physical education activities.  Funds may also support staff development and teacher education and training.  For the 2010 awards, 481 grants were submitted with 77 being funded.

The Williamsburg James City County Schools was awarded 1 million dollars over three years.  Physical Education equipment has been purchased for all WJCC Schools.  All Physical Education Teachers have received six days of intense staff development focusing on the implementation of the Five for Life activity and nutrition curriculum.

Students have been involved in pedometer education.  Students wear pedometers to register the number of steps they take in a physical education class period.  This helps students to look at their activity level.  Randomly selected students have taken the pedometer home to wear for 4 to 7 days recording their steps to look at their daily activity level. Pedometers have been shown to help increase activity level because they are easy to use and give immediate feedback.

Congressman Wittman Attends PEP Training

Congressman Rob Wittman attended the Williamsburg James City County Schools PEP grant training on May 2nd held at Quarterpath Recreation Center. The training was conducted by trainers from Focused Fitness.

Congressman Wittman talked to the physical education teachers about the importance of physical education in shaping student’s knowledge of good exercise habits for a lifetime of wellness along with skill development so that all students will be able to participate in activity.  He talked about the obesity crisis in our country and stressed the importance of physical education as one of the solutions.  He emphasized that PEP grants are instrumental in providing school division’s equipment and training to help them meet the current needs of the students.

He then participated in one of the active nutrition/ skill development lessons with the teachers, gaining experience in best practices in physical education.  The WJCC school division is in the district Congressman Wittman represents in Washington.  He was able to see firsthand the benefits that the PEP grant brings to the physical education program.
