School Health Initiative Program

SHIP is a partnership between the WJCC School Division and the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation, and a multitude of other community partners that are committed to working together to create a healthier community.  SHIP’s mission is to improve health and wellness for WJCC public school students and staff by supporting and promoting healthy living in the school, home, and community.

SHIP’s vision of success is when:

  • there is a strong and sustainable culture of health and wellness for students and staff in every school;

  • parents are actively engaged in promoting and supporting health and wellness for their children;

  • WJCC public school students are achieving targets for health, wellness, and school engagement;

  • WJCC public school staff are actively teaching, enabling, affirming, and modeling healthy behaviors for students.

The mission and vision of SHIP are based on theoretical assumptions, grounded in research, which recognize that individual change is guided and supported by a wide variety of influences. These include: individual knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs; social culture and institutional factors that influence rules, regulations and informal structures; community support, social networks and norms, or standards, which exist as formal or informal among individuals, groups, and organizations; and public policy factors which include local, state, and federal policies and laws that regulate or support healthy actions and practices for disease prevention, early detection, control, and management.
