Berkeley Middle School Cafeteria Manager Cheryl Jackson prepares for her SHIP Chef's Challenge Cooking Club. Guest Chefs from Colonial Williamsburg's Apprentice Program visited the Club to demonstrate their culinary skills and to help the students. The group prepared Fresh Salsa, Roasted Veggies, and Romaine Wrap-N-Rolls as part of the Fruits & Veggies - More Matters unit. The Club meets after school for 7 weeks and ends with a Top Chef cook off. Chef Challenge Clubs are also held at James Blair and Toano Middle Schools. |

JHS Students celebrate the start of CNS STEPPING OUT with fun, physical activities in the lunch room. Students enjoyed hoola hoops, jump ropes, and more. CNS STEPPING OUT is the new Child Nutrition Services Staff Wellness Program. CNS Staff hope to role model physical activity to the children they serve each day. |
The new, fresh salad bar at Jamestown High School is being enjoyed by Ms.
Alanna Burns (JHS Media Specialist) and Lauren Freeland. All high schools have
salad bars opening in March 2009. The salad bars are made possible by a
partnership between Child Nutrition Services and the School Health Initiative

bread dough to decorate the serving lines.

Toano Middle School Chefs Challenge cooking club students created a “Got Milk?” bulletin board in the cafeteria using National Dairy Council “Fuel Up To Play 60” promotional materials and photos of themselves with milk mustaches. The “Fuel Up To Play 60” program encourages 60 minutes of active play a day. Students in the club put ideas for winter sports on creative, hand cut snowflakes. Even Cafeteria Manager Donna Altizer and her assistant Joyce Smith “got milk”! |
