Keep in shape by using the SHIP Program.

Greetings to our fantastic WJCC-in-Action supporters and new participants:

We are pleased to announce the 2010 edition of WJCC-in-Action, WJCC’s employee wellness program, beginning April 12, 2010 and running for 6 weeks! WJCC-in-Action promotes moderate activity, good nutrition, and teamwork.  Moderate activity is anything that makes you breathe as hard as you would during a brisk walk and raise your heart rate. This physical activity should be sustained for at least 15 minutes to be counted for this program.  Walking, swimming, bicycle riding and dancing are some fun activities that count as moderate activity. Most healthy adults can increase their level of moderate physical activity without an extensive medical exam. However, some may need to check with a doctor before beginning or changing your physical activity habits.

Begin by forming teams of 8 to 12 people. We want to encourage as many people to be a part of a team, so if you have more than 12 or less than 8, you may still form a team.  Each site may form as many teams as possible!  Team captains report their team points to Janice Fowler, Supervisor of Health Services at the end of the 6 week program.  In addition, team members that report eating 5 servings of fruits and or vegetables on their log sheets at least 4 out of 7 days per week for a minimum of 4 weeks will earn an extra 25 points for their team if they submit their logs to their team captains no later than May 26th at the end of the program (see attached logs with instructions).  Captains submit completed logs of all team members at the end of the 6 week program to Janice Fowler at Student Services so the points can be added to the team total.

To get started, form teams of 8–12 employees and select a team captain and team name. Team name, captain name, and team member list should be sent to fowlerj@wjcc.k12.va.us by April 12, 2010.
Team members may exercise alone or with a teammate(s) to compile points for the team! One minute of exercise equals one point (step counters may assist you in counting your steps, but will not equate to one minute of exercise per step).  Individuals calculate their own points and give 2 week totals to their team captain EVERY 2 WEEKS (hint: keep track of your minutes/points on the attached INDIVIDUAL TRACKING LOGS we have provided). Weeks start on a Monday and end on a Sunday.

Individual 2 week totals for Monday, April 12th through Sunday, April 25th – report totals to captains on Monday, April 26th

Individual 2 week totals for Monday, April 26th through Sunday May 9th – report totals to captains on Monday, May 10th
Individual 2 week totals for Monday, May 10th through Sunday, May 23rd – report totals to captains on Monday, May 24th
Submit completed log sheets to team captain no later than May 12th - Note name, team name and school on the log sheet(s)
Captains will total the points for the team and submit the final team totals no later than May 28th to fowlerj@wjcc.k12.va.us under the subject heading Team Totals
Captains should also send the team logs to determine who met their 5-a-day goals by May 28th (in the pony by May 27th) to Janice Fowler at Student Services so the extra points can be added to the totals and incentives can be awarded.

Totals will be tabulated based on an average of 10 members. The team with the most points at the end of the 6-week period will be our WJCC-in-Action champions for 2010. In addition, all WJCC-in-Action team members who participate in the ENTIRE 6 weeks of the program and who turn in their individual logs on time will receive an incentive at the end of the program. At a minimum, we are asking that all participants aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise, 4 days per week.  To receive your incentive: Keep track of your points on the individual activity log provided. Every two weeks, beginning April 26th, report your two week total to your TEAM CAPTAIN. At the end of the program, give your Individual Log to your team captain NO LATER than Wednesday, May 26th.  TEAM CAPTAINS should pony all completed individual logs to Janice Fowler at Student Services no later than May 27th (in order for us to receive the forms by Friday, May 28th) in order for team members to receive incentives.

Thank you all ahead of time for spreading with word about WJCC-in-Action and encouraging your colleagues to join in on the fun!
Janice Fowler and Michelle Alexander
