German alphabet characters
There is an easy way of doing umlauts and the esszet on your PC. You can assign the keystroke yourself, instead of typing all those numbers each time.
In Microsoft Word, click on "insert", then click on "symbol". A table will come up. Make sure the font says (normal text)Ý. Select one of the umlauts, by clicking on it ONCE. Then at the bottom of the table, it will say "Shortcut key" or "change keystroke". Click on that. You then assign the keystroke you want, by typing it in. I suggest Alt+u for ü, for example. For the capital Ü, you can use Alt+Shift+u. You go through this for each letter. Then every time you want to use one of them you just type in the two buttons you assigned.
If you want to use umlauts and the esszet in another application other than word, you can also change your keyboard to a German keyboard set up. You click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, and then Keyboard.
If you still want to do it the hard way use the Alt key along with the below listed numbers to obtain the desired umlaut.
