BERKELEY HISTORY

Berkeley Middle School has served the community for 45 plus years. It has been a high school, an intermediate school, a junior high, and an elementary school. For more than a decade, however, it has served as a middle school. Originally designed for 350 students, Berkeley was renovated and expanded during the 1998-99 school year. It has more than doubled in capacity, with a target enrollment of 775 students. The expansion has added two new academic wings to the school, each featuring 12 classrooms, two workrooms, support facilities, storage areas, and commons areas. Also new is our beautiful media center, which is more than double the size of the original and boasts computer work stations, a reading lab, teacher work areas, and a new media retrieval system. The renovation has also brought new life to the original school building, with refurbished classrooms, new technology infrastructures, and a new pitched roof. At $9.5 million, this project has been the most significant physical change to the school in its history. Despite Berkeley's new size, the staff continues to strive and maintain the small-school atmosphere that has always characterized Berkeley.
