Dear Norge Family,

Welcome back from spring break.  I hope you all had time to relax and enjoy the warmer weather with friends and family. It’s hard to believe we are beginning our fourth quarter. I have a few spring time reminders for you and your family that I hope will be helpful.

Sun safety reminders: Please remind your children to practice sun safety. The Centers for Disease control (CDC) offers many practical suggestions for being safe in the sun. Some suggestions include seeking shade during the mid day hours and wearing a hat with a large brim that offers protection to the face, ears and back of neck. Use sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays. Wear clothing to protect areas of skin that may be exposed to the sun's rays. The use of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 is also recommended.

Water safety reminders:  The CDC suggest the most important thing you can do to protect your child in and or around water is to teach them to swim. Check the local recreational departments about swimming lessons. Remind children they should be supervised in the water. No diving in the shallow end or in water where they can't see the bottom. Children should also wear life jackets when boating, water skiing, fishing or jet skiing.

Tick safety: Children can come into contact with ticks in wooded or grassy areas. Check students every evening for ticks, especially on days when they have spent time outdoors. The CDC recommends paying attention to the following areas in particular: Under the arms, in, around and behind the ears and hairline, inside the navel, the back of the knees, and around the waist and legs where garments and undergarments are snug fitting.

For more information about keeping your child safe go to www.CDC.gov and also check out www.bam.gov.

I hope you all get out and enjoy the warm weather,
Karen Byrd RN
